Bee Hive Extraction in Eastern NC
bee HIVE EXTRACTION IN eastern nc
A bee hive extraction in Eastern NC can become necessary when bees have moved into an unwanted structure.
“It is my opinion the most humane and effective way to permanently rid of the unwanted guest is to remove all bees and parts of the hive, and then plug entry holes. Even ignoring my personal appreciation, respect, and love for the little gals’, I would refrain from spraying an infestation from a cost effective stand point related to the consequences associated with killing an entire colony abruptly. For the first example let us use the example of an infestation in a wall of a house. Let’s say the homeowner decides to spray pesticides and is successful in killing the entire colony. An average honey bee colony population is over 30,000 bees, gallons of honey, and pounds of wax. Now all these substances are left in the wall vulnerable to ant, wax moth, and hive beetle infestation, not to mention the smell of the decay of the colony. In the years to come after the ants, wax moth, and hive beetles have cleaned out the resources the empty cavity becomes a likely spot for scout bees looking for a new hive location to smell the remnants of the old hive and the entire scenario return.”
– Nicholas Ball, Owner

The removal process differs according to what type of structure has become infested, however there are many similarities.
STEP 1: The first step is for you to submit a picture to make sure that your intruders are actually honey bees.
STEP 2: We will meet you at the hive location for inspection to determine the least invasive approach to relocate your unwelcomed visitors, minimalizing damage to affected structure.
STEP 3: Once an agreed approach is established, removal day is scheduled.
STEP 4: On removal day, if the access point is indoors or touches a finished surface the first thing our team will do is cover any areas with plastic, so they don’t become soiled. This usually takes a half hour to hour. Next we block any escape routes that bees may take. Only then will the removal phase begin. or each colony that is being removed, you can expect the removal to range from two hours through twelve hours.
Step 5: Once all the bees and comb are removed and relocated into a hive box to be transported to our apiary, the clean up phase begins. We clean the area meticulously, including the comb, honey, and all bee debris, to prevent future bees from moving in. A non-toxic spray will be sprayed into the cavity and all entrance holes once used to enter the hive are caulked, as a deterrent.
Step 6: At this time plastic is then picked up and any contaminated surface not protected by plastic are cleaned. The clean up phase typically takes from 1-4 hours.
If hives are outside in trees, garbage cans, boats, sheds, or whatever structure they choose for their habitat, preparation phase and clean up phase are usually minimal.
During the hive removal process, if there is extra honey that the bees are able to survive without, the customer is offered some. The bees are then relocated to our Apiary in Fayetteville, NC.
Pricing varies with hive extractions. Hive extractions generally range from $200.00 – $1200.00.

HOW WE EXTRACT BEE HIVES FROM YOUR STRUCTURE
The IMPORTANCE of bees in our community
In the US, honey bees contribute about $10 Billion to food production. They are important as the primary pollinators of almonds, apples, blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupes, cranberries, cucumbers, forage crops, kiwi fruit, squash, and watermelons.
In North Carolina, there are about 10,000 beekeepers who keep bees for pleasure and profit. Ballz Beez works hard to do everything possible to salvage honey bee colonies that have become a problem in structural walls.
- HONEY BEES: Honey bees vary in color from yellow to black, have black or brown bands across the abdomen, and are much smaller than a carpenter bee. Honey bees are about 2/3″ long and the body is covered with setae or hair.
- CARPENTER BEES: Carpenter bees have bright yellow, orange or white hairs on the thorax and a black shiny abdomen on the dorsal side. Carpenter bees are robust, heavy bodied bees that range 3/4″ – 1″. These insects bore half inch wide holes that appear to be perfectly round on exterior wooden surfaces.
- YELLOW JACKETS: Yellow jackets are about 1/2″ and the abdomen is characterized by having alternating yellow and black bands. European hornets are much larger (1.5″) than honey bees and sometimes establish colonies inside structural walls.
PLEASE NOTE: Honey bees will defend themselves if they believe that they, the hive or their queen is being threatened. Avoid disturbing a bee colony unless you are fully protected. If you encounter bees that are flying and appear to be out of control, simply walk away slowly without swatting at the bees. Swatting at bees will only irritate them more. If you find yourself being attacked by defensive bees, cover your head with your shirt and run quickly through dense vegetation or seek shelter in a vehicle or building, if possible.
